redcardThe internet is a wash with companies laying claim to being able to deliver great website success.  The claims come in an array of slick sales pitches, but the question always remains can you trust them to actually deliver? Can you trust them to look after your website and push hard for good results that translate into business.

Some 4 years ago I was contacted by a small business owner based in the North West of England, he was looking for someone he could trust to make the odd change when requested and to get his website out of Google penalty situation.   He liked what I had to offer and commissioned a new website, with an agreement for me to carry out any ad hoc additions when he requested them.

With the redesign of the website live and after a few tweaks and pushes from me in the right direction, the website was out of Google penalties and picking up a little speed.

No goose that laid the golden egg.

The client at the time had an array of other companies working on SEO, social presence and ‘get you to the top of Google schemes’.  The cost of these schemes was extraordinary and the results less than acceptable.  I pointed out having looked at the data that I could perhaps work more pro-actively for him driving organic rankings and improving the user experience to increase conversions instead.  I explained that my plan wasn’t a quick win or the ‘goose that laid the golden egg’ but it should continue to reward him for many years to come.  He was sceptical and at the time again chose to spend more money on another schemes that shouted loudly about amazing results in a very short time.

A few months later I spoke to him again, he was scratching his head about the lack of business and website results not to mention the costly investments in other schemes he’d made.  I suggested once again that maybe trying a longer term plan allowing me to pro-actively work on driving organic rankings and improving the user experience could be of great benefit.  This time he agreed and made a small investment in a 3 month trial.

After 3 months he renewed and then renewed again.  10 months on he’s still happy with the twice montly work I do on his website, the attention I put in to improving both organic rankings, user experience and of course conversions.

The results over a period of 10 months can be seen below, this data is taken from Google and compares Sept 2013 – June 2014 against September 2014 – June 2015

The headlines are –

  • 10% increase in sessions (visits)
  • 22% reduction in bounce rate
  • 28% increase in pages per session
  • 924% increase in visits to the contact page (conversion rate)

A side benefit of the work is also his website has many more pages of organic content targeted at specific searches his potential customers make.  This means he gains visits from many more search results, the quality of visits are better and so in turn he generates more business.

Overall the client is very happy indeed, he’s saving a lot of money and winning more business.

I would like to carry on as there has been a noticeable improvement but I think we still need to keep on top of it as there is a lot of competition out there.

In the end the client learnt having someone who’s passionate and results driven working on his website on a scheduled programme proves to be a good return on investment.  As the client himself said … we still need to keep on top of it as there is a lot of competition out there.
