Looking for an alternative to windows? Maybe you’ve become fed up with ‘blue screens of death’, constant updates, want to keep an old machine going or simple want an alternative to windows for no other reason than you fancy a change.

Well there is an alternative to windows and it’s called Linux.  Linux is a freely available operating system than can be tried before you install without damaging any system and can even run alongside windows if you choose.  It runs on almost any machine too!

Linux works straight away – provides quick and easy access to the internet and all your favorite websites, plus you can download and install many free applications and games.  The smart thing is you can even run linux from a cd or pen drive

If you want an alternative to windows then linux is the answer.  The only trouble is which version of linux would should you use – linux comes in many flavours such as –

• Debian, a non-commercial distribution maintained by a volunteer developer community with a strong commitment to free software principles
• Ubuntu, a popular desktop and server distribution derived from Debian, maintained by British company Canonical Ltd.
• Kubuntu, the KDE version of Ubuntu.
• Linux Mint, a distribution based on and compatible with Ubuntu.
• Xubuntu is the Xfce version of Ubuntu.
• Lubuntu, the LXDE version of Ubuntu, is advertised as a lightweight distribution.
• Fedora, a community distribution sponsored by American company Red Hat

Plus there’s loads more not listed here there really is something for everyone including a Media Centre version too, the version you install or try is up to you – try them all if you like, they all are freely available online.

As an alternative to windows, Linux is the answer.  Or you may simply want to carry on with Windows and try the new Windows 8 upgrade for £25.  Your choice 🙂
